One step to zooming like a pro
The stage: New York City 1959, A mosaic of kids fingerprints and face smudges on every department story window. The new lineup of toys has just been released before the upcoming holiday season. The children standing with their mouths ajar dreaming of the life that is waiting for them just beyond the glass. Window shopping was a thing of the past where families actually had to step outside of their homes to see the new products coming on display. Now fast forward to 2020. Our life is filled with that same longing for what our life could look like beyond the glass. But instead of a department store window, we are viewing our beautiful world through the glass of a screen.
If 2020 has taught us anything, it is how people long for a real connection with others. They look through their devices to the ones on the other side, much like those kids looking at the new toys in the department store window with anticipation. They can wait for life to return to normal. But what will the new “Normal” be? Unfortunately, this answer is still to be determined, but in this void of information a new query is birthed. Is your business ready for the normal to come?
Since its creation, the internet has been reshaping the way people do things from shopping, to dating and everything in between. It has allowed businesses to expand in many different directions and reach new groups of people otherwise unreachable. But despite the internet permeating the workforce, one thing that has been hard-lined in business, face to face is best. Meetings are better in person, working is better in person, and life is better in person, but what if in person is a thing of the past? How do you continue to inspire a productive workforce from behind a screen?
Now that being said, it is important for you to understand that this blog is not to help teach you how to lead. This blog is here to give you an important and easy tool to help your leadership ability translate through a screen.
A TechSmith.com study recently had a large group of people watch 100 videos from all over the internet and then asked them questions to determine what kept them engaged. The picture below shows the answers from that study. Here is what is interesting from their answers, the leading cause for a viewer to be engaged in your content is clear audio at 89%. This is huge. Why? Well I would bet that most people enter their zoom/hangout/team meeting with nothing but a built-in computer mic in a room fill with background noise. This is like putting a toddler in the middle of the floor surrounded by toys and then asking him or her to listen to all of your instructions without distraction. So, what’s the fix?
Easy.
Get a mic. Right?
Well, that is a step in the right direction, but clear audio is more than just an expensive mic. You need to pay attention to the details of your surroundings and mitigate unwanted distractions.
Clear audio = A clear and balanced feed of principle communicator without noise or uncontrolled background sounds.
It is in this simple preplanning step that takes your meeting from everyday chaos to the beginning of a polished production which allows your watcher or meeting participant the maximum opportunity to be engaged in your meetings.
